We understand that seeking treatment for TMJ disorders, facial pain, sleep apnea, or snoring can come with a lot of questions. We’ve answered some of the most common questions below to help you better understand your symptoms, treatment options, and what to expect from your care at Tulsa TMJ & Sleep Disorders Clinic.
Most patients begin to notice improvement within the first month of treatment. For many
common cases, maximum improvement is typically achieved within 4–6 months. More complex
cases—particularly those involving structural joint changes, chronic pain patterns, or other
conditions affecting the jaw joints or surrounding muscles—may require additional time and
treatment modalities such as physical therapy.
TMJ disorders can be associated with a wide range of symptoms that may vary from person to
person. Common symptoms include ear pain, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), vertigo, ear
congestion or pressure, eye pain or pressure, headaches and migraines, neck and shoulder
pain, clenching or grinding, pain while chewing, and clicking or popping of the jaw.
TMJ-related pain can also vary in both location and intensity. It may occur directly in the jaw
joint, present as a sharp pain when opening or closing the mouth, or feel like a persistent, dull
ache in the surrounding muscles. Because TMJ pain can radiate to other areas, it is not
uncommon for it to be mistaken for a headache, earache, or other type of facial pain.
A night guard is a general dental appliance designed primarily to protect the teeth from
grinding and is typically flat and non-specific in its design. In contrast, a TMJ orthotic is a
precisely calibrated device designed to guide the jaw into a stable position while reducing stress
and pressure on the jaw joints. Orthotics are customized using a specific bite taken by the
doctor. They are intended to provide support for the jaw joints and to recapture the disc—not
simply to protect the teeth.
We work closely with several orthodontists throughout the Tulsa and Rogers areas. When TMJ
concerns are present, we generally recommend stabilizing the jaw joints before beginning
orthodontic treatment. Addressing the jaw joints first can help establish a more stable
foundation for orthodontic treatment and may help prevent complications or the need for a
longer treatment period.
TMJ treatment may be eligible for coverage through either medical or dental insurance, with
medical insurance often providing greater benefits. Coverage varies by insurance company and
individual plan, so benefits and reimbursement cannot be guaranteed.
As a courtesy, we are happy to file insurance claims on your behalf and assist with the
reimbursement process; however, we cannot guarantee payment or coverage. Because TMJ
treatment is not covered by all insurance plans, payment is due in full at the time of service.
Any insurance reimbursement received will be paid directly to the insured/patient.
We accept CareCredit rather than offering an in-house payment plan. CareCredit offers a 12-
month deferred-interest plan. As long as your balance is paid in full before the 12-month period
ends, no interest will be charged.
Applying is quick and easy. You can apply online at www.carecredit.com or call 1-800-365-8295
to apply by phone.
Unfortunately, these programs generally provide no coverage for the specialized TMJ services
we provide. For this reason, our practice has opted out of Medicare and does not participate
with these programs or file claims for reimbursement. Patients who are enrolled in these
programs are responsible for payment in full at the time of service. We are unable to submit
claims for reimbursement on their behalf.
